You’ve got a layer standing apart from the flock, tail drooping, looking thin even though she’s eating fine. No respiratory issues. No visible mites. You worm her on a hunch, and two weeks later she’s back to laying and acting normal. These are nasty because the damage they do can be severe before you even know they’re there.
Gapeworms (Syngamus trachea) live in the trachea and cause a distinctive symptom: a bird that stretches its neck and opens its beak repeatedly, as if trying to dislodge something. People call this “gaping.” It’s more common in birds that have access to earthworms, slugs, and snails, which serve as intermediate hosts. Young birds are more vulnerable than adults.
Tapeworms do exist in chickens but are less commonly a major problem than the above. They require intermediate hosts like beetles, ants, or earthworms to complete their life cycle. In heavy infestations you’ll sometimes see segments in the droppings, though they’re easy to miss.
What surprised me when I really got into this was how asymptomatic a significant worm burden can be. A bird can be carrying a meaningful load of roundworms and still eat, still lay, still socialize, and still look reasonably healthy to a casual eye. How Chickens Get Infected

Another bird pecks around, ingests eggs, and the cycle continues. Roundworm eggs can survive in soil for years under the right conditions. Earthworms are an important transport host for several species, including cecal worms and gapeworms. Earthworms ingest the parasite eggs from the soil, and when your chickens eat the earthworms, they pick up the larvae. This is one of those genuinely uncomfortable trade-offs in chicken keeping. Foraging on pasture is good for your birds in a lot of ways, but it also exposes them to parasites at a rate that confined birds don’t experience.
Birds in constantly rotating fresh pasture have a natural advantage because they’re not continually re-infecting themselves in the same contaminated ground. Birds on a fixed run, especially one with bare dirt, are in a different situation. The worm pressure in that kind of environment can be relentless.
New birds are another major vector. I don’t care how healthy a bird looks when you buy her. Quarantine new additions for a minimum of 30 days, and consider getting a fecal float done during that window. It costs around $25 to $40 at most vets and it tells you exactly what you’re dealing with.

Routine worming without knowing what you’re dealing with is better than ignoring the problem entirely, but it’s not ideal. Different wormers target different parasites, and you’re better off knowing what you have.
Fecal flotation is the gold standard for a backyard keeper. You collect fresh droppings from several birds, mix them in a flotation solution (zinc sulfate is common), and a technician examines the sample under a microscope. It will tell you whether eggs are present and what type. Many poultry vets, university extension offices, and even some online mail-in services offer this. Watching your birds closely gives you useful clues even without a lab test:

There are no FDA-approved anthelmintics (wormers) specifically licensed for laying hens in the US. That means any worming treatment you use on a laying hen is technically an extra-label use, which legally requires a veterinarian’s prescription and guidance.
The practical reality is that many keepers use over-the-counter products. I’m not recommending you bypass your vet. What I am saying is that you should understand the landscape.
Fenbendazole (Safeguard) is probably the most widely used wormer in backyard flocks. Safeguard Goat Wormer at 10% concentration is the formulation most people use. The typical approach is 1 ml per 5 pounds of body weight given orally for 5 consecutive days. It’s effective against roundworms, cecal worms, and some capillary worms. It does not treat tapeworms or gapeworms reliably.
Albendazole is broader spectrum and more effective against capillary worms, but it carries teratogenic risks if given to laying hens (it can cause defects in developing embryos). Most vets recommend not using it on laying hens or at least advising an extended egg withdrawal period.
Ivermectin is sometimes used but has variable efficacy against the worms that matter most in chickens. It’s also extra-label and has a withdrawal period you need to respect.

Step 2: Talk to a vet. If the fecal comes back positive, contact a poultry vet. They can prescribe the right wormer for the species present and advise on dosing and egg withdrawal.
Step 3: Treat the whole flock. Don’t just treat symptomatic birds. If one bird has worms, assume others do too, even if they look fine. Treat everyone at the same time.

You can’t fully prevent worms if your birds have access to soil. What you can do is reduce the burden and catch problems early.
Pasture rotation is the single most effective tool, and it’s free if you have the space. Giving a pasture area a 3 to 6 month rest dramatically reduces the infective egg population in the soil. Even rotating between two sections helps.
Clean, dry conditions in the coop and run matter more than most people think. Worm eggs thrive in moisture. A muddy run with wet droppings sitting around is a parasite incubator. Keeping the run dry with good drainage and fresh bedding, like a deep litter system, reduces that pressure.
