Before you spend a dime on hardware, you need to know your enemies. And I mean that literally. The predators threatening your flock vary a lot by region, and so do their methods.

Raccoons are the masterminds. They have dexterous hands, they’re patient, and they’ll work a latch for twenty minutes if they think there’s food on the other side. I’ve watched one on a trail camera manipulate a hook-and-eye latch in under four minutes. Foxes are more about speed and brute force, usually exploiting gaps or digging under runs. When you’re attaching hardware cloth, use J-clips or staples designed for the purpose, then back them up with washers and screws around the perimeter. Staples alone pull out. I learned that after a particularly motivated fox popped a stapled section away from a frame corner and got into my run. Every seam, every join, every edge needs mechanical fastening, not just clipped together.

For windows and vents, frame them out with wood and attach the hardware cloth to the inside of the frame, not the outside. Predators pull outward. You want them working against the frame itself, not the fasteners.

Digging is one of the most underestimated threats to a backyard flock. Foxes, coyotes, skunks, and even rats will tunnel under a run wall if given enough time and motivation. Burying your run wire straight down works, but it’s labor-intensive and often ineffective because diggers will just go deeper.

The better approach is the apron method. Instead of burying the wire vertically, you extend it horizontally outward from the base of your run like a skirt, laying it flat on the ground and covering it with soil, mulch, or gravel. Two feet of outward extension is the minimum. Three feet is better.

It works because when a predator starts digging at the base of your run, they hit wire almost immediately. Their instinct isn’t to back up two feet and start digging again. They give up and move on. I’ve used this for eight years. Every spring when the fox trots through my yard and sniffs around the run, she leaves without a bird.

Laying a predator apron:

  1. Set your run frame in place and secure the vertical walls.

Latches, Locks, and the Raccoon Problem

If a raccoon can open your coop latch with one hand, it will. Eventually. Raccoons are smart enough to learn from trial and error, and they’ll be back night after night until they figure it out.

Simple hook-and-eye latches? Not secure enough. Barrel bolts? Not on their own. Twist knobs? Not secure enough. These things are fine as a first layer, but never as your only layer.

What works is any latch that requires two separate actions to open. A carabiner clipped through a barrel bolt. A padlock. If your run is fully enclosed with a solid roof, you’re good. If it’s a larger free-range area or a partially covered run, you have options. Deer netting stretched over the top is inexpensive and will stop most aerial predators. It’s not impenetrable, but hawks don’t typically push through netting the way they would dive into an open run. Old CDs hung on fishing line, scarecrows, predator eye balloons? I’ve tried them all. They work for a few weeks, then they don’t. The hawks figure it out. Real physical coverage is the only answer that sticks.

For nighttime, owls are a genuine threat, particularly great horned owls, which are strong enough to take a full-size hen. Your coop door being closed by dark is your main defense here. Birds should be inside by the time it’s fully dark, not roosting on top of the coop or lingering in the run.

Electric fencing deserves a mention here.
