Most backyard flock owners have never seen a case of Newcastle disease in person. I hadn’t either, for the first six years I kept chickens. Newcastle disease is a viral respiratory and neurological illness caused by a paramyxovirus. Specifically, virulent strains of avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1). The name comes from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England, where a 1926 outbreak was first described in the scientific literature.
Here’s the part that catches people off guard: not all Newcastle disease is the same. There are lentogenic strains (mild, often nearly asymptomatic), mesogenic strains (moderate respiratory illness), and velogenic strains (the catastrophic kind that can kill an entire flock in 72 hours). The velogenic form is what the USDA classifies as “virulent Newcastle disease” and what triggers federal quarantine protocols. The lentogenic strains? Widely used in live attenuated vaccines given to commercial broilers and layers every day across the country.
You might be wondering why you’ve heard the name and felt alarmed, but haven’t heard of it killing local backyard flocks every spring. Lentogenic strains are genuinely common and mostly harmless. Velogenic strains are rare in the U.S. and treated as an agricultural emergency when they appear.
The distinction matters enormously when you’re assessing risk.
Signs Your Chickens Might Have It
The symptoms vary significantly depending on the strain and the individual bird’s immune status, but here’s what the velogenic form typically looks like in the order you’d observe it:
- Sudden, rapid death (sometimes with no prior symptoms at all)
- Respiratory distress: gasping, rattling breath, mucus discharge
- Neurological signs: twisted neck (torticollis), walking in circles, paralysis of wings or legs
- Drop in egg production, sometimes to near zero within 48 hours
- Swelling of the head and tissues around the eyes
- Greenish, watery diarrhea
Mild lentogenic infections might show only mild sneezing, a drop in production, or nothing visible at all. The bird recovers. You never know it happened.
The neurological signs (twisting neck, circling, falling over) are among the most distinctive features of velogenic Newcastle and help distinguish it from Marek’s disease, which also causes neurological symptoms. Marek’s tends to cause leg paralysis in younger birds and progresses over weeks. Newcastle can disable a bird neurologically in days, often with concurrent respiratory signs.
A backyard keeper in rural Georgia told me last year that she noticed her rooster holding his head sideways and assumed he’d gotten hurt sparring. By the time she called a vet two days later, three hens were dead. The twist: her flock tested negative for virulent Newcastle. It was Marek’s. Which is exactly why you do not self-diagnose this.

This is where I want to be blunt: Newcastle disease spreads very easily through respiratory secretions, feces, and contaminated surfaces and equipment. The virus can survive on feathers and litter for weeks in cool conditions. People tracking it from farm to farm on boots, clothing, and hands is one of the primary transmission routes.
Scenario: A backyard keeper attends a swap meet, handles birds from three different sellers, drives home, and walks into the coop to check feeders without changing clothes. If any of those birds were shedding Newcastle virus, the keeper just became a vector.
Action taken: That same keeper started keeping a dedicated pair of coop boots and a coverall hanging inside the coop door, used every time, for every person entering.
Result: Zero additional disease events in a flock of 22 birds over the following 18 months, even while a respiratory illness (confirmed Mycoplasma gallisepticum, not Newcastle) circulated in flocks within a five-mile radius.
The lesson isn’t paranoia. It’s that cheap, boring biosecurity habits actually work.
Wild birds are also a significant reservoir, especially cormorants and shorebirds along coastlines. The 2018-2020 outbreak of virulent Newcastle disease in Southern California (which affected backyard flocks, exhibitions, and some commercial operations) was traced in part to wild double-crested cormorants. As of June 2026, the USDA APHIS continues active surveillance in wild bird populations, and that’s a monitoring effort worth paying attention to if you’re in a coastal flyway zone.
Diagnosis and What to Do If You Suspect It
Do not wait and see. If you’re seeing sudden unexplained deaths combined with respiratory or neurological signs, you need to make calls the same day.
Your state veterinarian’s office and your state department of agriculture both have emergency lines. So does the USDA APHIS at 1-844-820-2234. These agencies can help you access free or low-cost diagnostic testing through state animal health labs and the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa.
I know the instinct is to avoid calling officials because it feels like inviting trouble. Here’s what I tell people: velogenic Newcastle disease is a federally reportable condition. If you have it and you don’t report it, and it spreads, the consequences are significantly worse than if you call immediately. Quarantine and euthanasia decisions are made based on laboratory confirmation, not on a phone call. You’re not triggering anything by asking for testing.
Suspect velogenic Newcastle → Call state vet and USDA APHIS the same day → Sample submitted for PCR at state lab → Confirmed negative (most common outcome) → Flock placed under brief monitoring, cause of illness pursued through other diagnostics.
That’s actually how most of these situations resolve. People call, they test, it isn’t velogenic Newcastle, and they get pointed toward what it actually is.
Vaccination: What’s Available and Who Needs It
Live attenuated Newcastle vaccines (B1, La Sota strains) are available without a prescription and are widely used in commercial settings. For backyard keepers, they’re worth knowing about but not necessarily the right first move.
The vaccines are typically administered as eye drops, in drinking water, or as a spray. The LaSota strain is the most immunogenic but can cause mild respiratory signs in unprimed birds. The B1 strain is gentler and often recommended for initial vaccination.
Products like Merck’s NOBILIS® ND Clone 30 and the older B1/La Sota combination vaccines can be ordered through poultry supply companies. Current pricing (mid-2026) for a 1,000-dose vial runs roughly $15 to $25, which is a bargain, except that a 1,000-dose minimum isn’t practical for someone with 8 hens.
This is an area where I’ll admit my opinion isn’t universally shared: for a small backyard flock not involved in shows, swaps, or exhibitions, vaccination for Newcastle specifically isn’t always the highest priority. Marek’s vaccination at hatch (from a hatchery) and solid biosecurity often matter more at the scale most readers are operating at.
