Most people end up on this page because something is wrong with their flock and they’re not sure what, or they found mites on a bird and panicked, or someone in their chicken group told them “just use ivermectin” without explaining how. You might be wondering whether it’s even safe, whether it affects your eggs, how much to actually give, and why the bottle in front of you doesn’t say anything about chickens. All of that is completely reasonable.

Here’s what I tell people who are new to this: ivermectin works, it’s widely used by backyard keepers, and the dosing is more forgiving than you’d think once you understand the basics. But there are a few things worth getting straight before you pull the plunger.

What You’re Actually Treating (And Why It Matters Before You Dose)

Ivermectin covers a lot of ground in chickens. It’s effective against external parasites like northern fowl mites (Ornithogaster sylviarum), scaly leg mites (Knemidocoptes mutans), and lice. It also handles internal roundworms and some capillary worms. What it does not reliably treat: tapeworms. If you’re seeing flat, segmented worms in droppings, you need a different drug entirely (praziquantel, typically).

I mention this because a lot of keepers throw ivermectin at every worm situation and then wonder why the problem keeps coming back. Knowing what you’re treating affects which formulation makes sense, the frequency, and whether you’re even solving the right problem.

For mite infestations, which are honestly what most backyard keepers are dealing with, ivermectin is one of the best tools available. I’ve used it on flocks with heavy northern fowl mite loads where every other topical was failing, and it cleared things up within two treatment cycles.

Formulations: This Is Where People Get Confused

There’s no FDA-approved ivermectin product for chickens in the United States. Full stop. What keepers use is an off-label application of products designed for other species, most commonly:

Ivermectin 1% injectable solution (like Ivomec 1%, the classic cattle/swine product). Used topically on chickens, not injected. You apply it to the skin.

Ivermectin pour-on (like Durvet Ivermectin Pour-On or the generic equivalents). Originally designed for cattle. Applied to the skin.

Ivermectin paste (the horse wormer, usually 1.87% paste in a syringe). Oral dosing.

Each of these has a different concentration, which is where dosing mistakes happen. I’d recommend picking one formulation and sticking with it rather than switching around.

Here’s where I want to be specific, because vague advice is useless.

Ivermectin 1% injectable solution, used topically: The standard dose is 0.2 mg per kilogram of body weight. For a 2 kg hen (about 4.5 lbs), that’s 0.4 mg, which works out to 0.04 mL of the 1% solution. Applied directly to the skin, usually on the back of the neck where they can’t preen it off. This is the method I use and the one I recommend to new keepers because the dosing math is cleaner.

A practical note: most people eyeball a small drop on the skin for standard-sized hens and a tiny drop for bantams. “A drop” is not a precise measurement, but honestly, for a 5 lb hen using a 1% solution, the therapeutic window is generous enough that you’re not going to overdose a healthy bird with a normal drop. That said, use a 1 mL syringe with 0.01 mL markings if you want precision. They’re cheap.

Ivermectin pour-on (0.5% solution): Dose is the same 0.2 mg/kg, but because the concentration is half that of the injectable, you’re using twice the volume. For that same 2 kg hen, you’d apply 0.08 mL. Apply to bare skin, same location.

Ivermectin paste (1.87%): This one requires more math and more care. At 1.87%, you need roughly 0.1 mg/kg orally, which for a 2 kg bird is 0.2 mg total. That’s about 0.01 mL of the paste. Very small amount. I don’t use this method routinely because of how easy it is to get wrong and how variable absorption is orally in birds.

Repeat dosing: For mites, treat once, then repeat in 10 to 14 days to catch any eggs that hatched after the first treatment. That second dose isn’t optional if you want to actually clear the infestation. For internal parasites, a single treatment followed by a second dose 14 days later is standard.

The Egg Withdrawal Question

Nobody tells you this upfront, and it frustrates me that it’s buried in forum threads instead of front and center.

Ivermectin is detectable in eggs after treatment. Studies have shown residue in eggs for anywhere from 7 to 28 days depending on the formulation and dose. The USDA has no established tolerance for ivermectin residue in poultry eggs because it’s not an approved drug for laying hens, which means there’s also no official withdrawal period.

Here’s what I tell people: most experienced keepers and many avian vets use a 14-day egg withdrawal for topical doses at standard levels. Some go to 21 days to be safe. I personally use 17 days as my rule because that’s what my vet recommended, and I don’t have a strong reason to argue with that. I don’t treat layers during peak production if I can avoid it, and I plan treatments in late fall when egg production naturally drops.

If you’re selling eggs or giving them to people who are immune-compromised or pregnant, be conservative. Discard eggs for three weeks post-treatment, no exceptions.

A Contrarian Take Worth Hearing

A lot of online guides push ivermectin as the first-line treatment for every flock health problem involving crawling things. I’d push back on that. If you’re seeing lice specifically (flat, yellowish, fast-moving), permethrin-based dust or spray is actually more targeted and doesn’t require an egg withdrawal of the same magnitude. Permethrin isn’t absorbed systemically in the same way.

Ivermectin earns its place when you’re dealing with mites (which live partly on the bird’s blood and benefit from a systemic treatment), scaly leg mites in particular (where topical treatments alone often fail), or confirmed internal parasites. Using it for every lice case is like swatting flies with a sledgehammer. It works, but you’re running unnecessary egg withdrawal periods.


If you’re going to keep chickens for any length of time, you’ll eventually need ivermectin in your medicine cabinet. Get comfortable with the math now, before you’re panicking at 10 pm because your rooster’s legs look like bark.
