Most chicken-keeping guides tell you to put roosts “18 inches off the ground” and call it a day. That number isn’t wrong exactly, but it’s incomplete in ways that’ll cost you: broken toes, bumblefoot, a flock that refuses to use the roosts you built, or hens sleeping in the nesting boxes and fouling every egg you collect. Roost height is more nuanced than the hatchery FAQs let on. The right answer depends on your breed, your coop layout, and how your birds actually move.

Why Height Matters More Than You Think
Chickens are hardwired to sleep as high as they can reach. It’s a predator-avoidance instinct left over from jungle fowl ancestry, and it doesn’t care that your coop has hardware cloth and a padlocked door. A bird that can’t get high enough will be anxious. She’ll pace. She’ll fight for position. And if the only elevated option is a nesting box ledge, she’ll take it and sleep there, fouling every egg underneath.
Breaking that habit once it starts? Genuinely annoying.
Height also directly affects impact on landing. A hen jumping down from 4 feet hits the floor with real force. Do that twice a day for years and you’re looking at stress fractures, swollen hock joints, and bumblefoot from repeated microtrauma, especially on hard floors. Bigger breeds feel this more acutely, but no chicken walks away unscathed.
The Real Numbers by Breed Type
Here’s where the “18 inches” advice falls completely apart. That works fine for a bantam Cochin or a Silkie with feathered feet that can barely clear a fence. For most standard breeds, you want roosts between 2 and 4 feet off the ground. For heavy breeds, stay toward the lower end intentionally.
Bantams and Silkies: 12 to 18 inches is plenty. Silkies can’t fly well at all due to their feather structure, so anything above 18 inches is aspirational and occasionally dangerous.
Standard light breeds (Leghorns, Andalusians, Easter Eggers, production Reds): 3 to 4 feet. These birds are agile, light-bodied, and will actually use a high roost enthusiastically. They’ll congregate at the top like it’s the VIP section.
Standard heavy breeds (Buff Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Wyandottes): Keep it at 18 to 24 inches. A full-grown Buff Orpington hen hits 8 pounds. Dropping from 3.5 feet twice a day adds up fast, and you’ll see it in their joints.
Dual-purpose mid-size (Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Australorps): 2 to 3 feet is the sweet spot. They’re athletic enough to manage it, heavy enough to benefit from lower landing impact.
Most backyard keepers have mixed flocks, which is where a tiered roost ladder shines. Multiple rungs at 18 inches, 24 inches, and 36 inches lets every bird self-select according to ability. Higher-ranked birds claim the top; the others sort themselves out below. The social dynamics actually work better this way than one single bar everyone’s cramming onto.
Spacing and Horizontal Placement
Height without horizontal placement is half the job.
Roosts should be the highest point in the coop. If a wall shelf, a feeder hook, or a ledge above a window is taller than your roosts, a bird will sleep there instead. I found my Australorp pullets roosting on top of the feeder bracket for three weeks straight, directly above the feed. Not ideal.
Keep at least 12 inches of horizontal space per bird. 15 inches is better for large breeds. Crowding on the roost is one of the underrated causes of vent pecking because the bird below is stuck right at eye level with the vent of the bird above. Miserable situation.
The roost should sit 12 to 18 inches away from the wall so birds can actually balance without pressing their tail feathers against wood. Tail damage and mite infestations in the feathers often trace straight back to roosts built too tight to the wall.
What to Build Them From
Flat 2x4 lumber, wider side up, is the best all-around roost material. The flat surface lets birds cover their feet with their breast feathers in winter, preventing frostbite on toes. Round dowels and broomstick-style perches look natural but they’re genuinely worse for cold climates because the toes wrap around and stay exposed. I switched my flock from 1.5-inch dowels to flat 2x4s about six years ago and stopped having toe frostbite issues that same winter.
Avoid pressure-treated lumber anywhere birds perch or eat. Standard pine, poplar, or fir works fine. Sand the surface slightly so it grips without being rough enough to harbor bacteria in splits and gouges.
Natural branches aren’t a bad option either. Varying diameters do exercise the feet slightly differently. Just make sure they’re smooth enough to wipe down and don’t have loose bark where mites can hide.
Ramps and Ladder Access

For heavy breeds or any flock with older hens, a ramp up to the roost isn’t optional. It’s how you prevent injury. A 30-35 degree angle works for most birds. Steeper than 45 degrees and they’ll avoid it or slip. Add cleats every 3 to 4 inches: short screws, small wood strips, anything that gives them a foothold.
Dropping boards under the roost (basically a removable shelf that catches overnight droppings) don’t affect roost height choice, but they make the whole system dramatically easier to clean. I use a dropping board pulled out every two or three days and scraped into a bucket. It cuts the ammonia smell in an enclosed coop by more than half. That directly affects respiratory health. Worth building in from the start.
