Nobody warns you about the floor. You research breeds for weeks, obsess over nesting box dimensions, argue with yourself about automatic waterers, and then you throw down some pine shavings on bare dirt and call it done. I did exactly this with my first coop in 2015. By the following spring I had a muddy, ammonia-soaked mess that took a full weekend to rehabilitate, and two hens with scaly leg mite problems I’m convinced were made worse by the damp conditions underfoot.
The floor is the foundation of your whole biosecurity system. Get it wrong and you’re fighting moisture, pathogens, and predators on three fronts simultaneously.
What surprised me was how much disagreement exists among serious chicken keepers, even people with decades of experience, about which flooring setup is actually best. I’ve tried five different approaches across four coops at this point, and I’ll be honest: there’s no universal winner. But there are clear losers, and some options are dramatically undersold.
Dirt Floors: The One Everybody Starts With
Here’s the contrarian take I’ll stand behind: a bare dirt floor is almost always the worst long-term choice, even though it’s free. People defend it by pointing to how chickens live in nature, but “nature” doesn’t involve 8 hens in a 64-square-foot coop depositing 50+ pounds of manure a month in a confined space.
The problems are layered. Dirt holds moisture, and moisture is the primary driver of coccidiosis, bumblefoot, and respiratory issues from ammonia buildup. Predators, especially rats and minks, can tunnel under a dirt floor in hours. I’ve watched a determined Norway rat dig under a 2x4 footer in a single night.
If you’re stuck with an existing dirt-floor coop, the minimum intervention is a hardware cloth apron buried 12 inches down and extending 12 inches outward, plus a thick deep litter system (more on that below) to create some biological distance between the birds and the ground. It’s workable. It’s just not what I’d build intentionally.

Some coops, particularly elevated designs and tractor-style setups, use wire mesh as the actual floor. The idea is that manure drops through, ventilation is maximized, and cleaning is easy. In practice it’s more complicated.
Welded wire floors work tolerably in a chicken tractor you’re moving daily across pasture. The birds don’t stand on it long enough for foot problems to develop. But a stationary coop with a wire floor? After a few months you’ll see bumblefoot show up, especially in heavier breeds like Buff Orpingtons or Barred Rocks. The constant hard wire contact, particularly with the rough edges of cheaper 14-gauge welded wire, creates abrasions that get infected. If you go this route, use 1/2-inch hardware cloth (not 1x2 welded wire), add rubber anti-fatigue mat sections over the roosting areas, and inspect feet weekly.
Solid floors are what I’d recommend for any permanent coop. Poured concrete, pressure-treated plywood over joists, vinyl over plywood, or even rubber stall mats over a gravel base. Concrete is the gold standard for predator-proofing and longevity but it’s expensive, it holds cold, and it’s genuinely hard on feet if you don’t put adequate bedding on top. A 10x10 concrete pour with a 4-inch slab and wire mesh reinforcement can run $800-$1,200 professionally done. Plywood is far more common in backyard coops for good reason.

Three-quarter-inch pressure-treated plywood is what I currently use in two of my three permanent coops. It handles weight, it’s easy to cut and work with, and if you seal the joints with a waterproof construction adhesive and roll a coat or two of porch paint on the surface, it’ll last 8-10 years without rotting through.
The upgrade almost no one talks about: vinyl flooring on top of the plywood. I’m not joking. A $40 remnant piece of sheet vinyl from a flooring store, cut to fit and stapled down at the edges, transforms cleanup completely. Manure doesn’t soak into the wood. You can spray it down with a hose and a diluted white vinegar solution or a dedicated cleaner like Poultry Shield (which actually works, unlike a lot of products in this category). The surface stays cleaner between deep cleans, and when the vinyl eventually wears out, you rip it up and staple down a new piece. Your plywood underneath looks almost new.
I stumbled onto this when a neighbor doing kitchen renovations offered me their leftover flooring. I put it in as an experiment. I’ve now done it in every coop since.
The Deep Litter Method: What It Actually Requires
Deep litter gets presented online as this effortless, almost magical system where you just pile bedding, let it compost, and everything takes care of itself. That’s not wrong, but it leaves out enough important details to set beginners up for failure.
The method works like this: you start with 4-6 inches of carbon-rich bedding (pine shavings are the most common, and a 5.5 cubic foot bag of Tractor Supply’s DuMor shavings runs about $9-10 currently), then let it build over the season. The birds scratch it, their manure adds nitrogen, and microbial activity generates enough heat to suppress pathogens and reduce odor. Done correctly, you’re adding a thin layer of fresh shavings every week or two and doing one major cleanout once or twice a year.
Done incorrectly, you get a wet, anaerobic, ammonia-producing mat that’s worse than just cleaning regularly.
The things that kill a deep litter system: insufficient ventilation (you need much more than you think, even in winter), a waterer that drips or tips over, a floor space so small that the birds compact everything too quickly, and starting on bare dirt where moisture wicks up from below. On a sealed plywood or concrete floor, with a nipple waterer like the Harris Farms Hanging Drinker to eliminate spillage, and with good ridge or soffit ventilation, deep litter genuinely works well. I run it through the whole winter in zone 6b and ammonia is never an issue.
What surprised me when I first committed to the method properly was how warm the coop stayed. Active decomposition generates real heat. Not enough to replace a heat lamp in extreme cold, but enough to take the edge off.

I want to make a case for rubber stall mats as a base layer in coops with existing concrete or compacted gravel floors. The 4x6-foot, 3/4-inch mats sold for horse stalls at Tractor Supply run about $55 each currently. They’re heavy (around 100 pounds per mat), which is actually a feature since they don’t shift, they insulate the floor from cold, and they’re easy on feet.
On top of the mat you still run bedding. But the mat prevents the “cold slab” problem that makes concrete coops so uncomfortable in winter, and it gives you a cleanable base that you can pull out and scrub with a stiff brush twice a year. I’ve got two of these in my third coop, which has a poured concrete floor from the structure’s previous life as a small equipment shed. The birds visibly prefer that space in February.
