Most people think you just screw in a light bulb and wait for eggs. I thought the same thing my first winter keeping chickens, and I ended up with a flock of confused, sleep-deprived hens, a too-bright coop that stressed them out, and exactly zero improvement in production for about three weeks. So let me tell you what actually works, because the advice floating around most forums is vague enough to be useless.
The core thing to understand: hens stop laying in winter because their bodies are responding to day length, not temperature. A hen’s pineal gland detects light through her eye, and when day length drops below roughly 14 hours, her reproductive system basically goes dormant. She’s not lazy. She’s doing what 10,000 years of evolution trained her to do. Supplemental lighting tricks that system into thinking it’s still late spring.
What surprised me when I dug into this more seriously was how precise the threshold actually is. It’s not “less light means fewer eggs.” It’s closer to a switch. Most breeds hold production reasonably well until photoperiod drops below 14 hours, then output falls off a cliff. Above 16 hours produces no additional benefit over 14. That 2-hour window is where you’re working.
What Kind of Light, and How Much
Here’s where I’ll push back on the most common recommendation you’ll see: that incandescent bulbs are best because chickens see red light more effectively. That was probably true when people were comparing incandescents to older fluorescent tubes. Today’s LED options, specifically warm-spectrum LEDs in the 2700K to 3000K range, work just as well and run cheaper. I’ve been using a cheap Philips 40W-equivalent warm LED (A19, around $8 at any hardware store) in each of my coops for the last four winters with zero issues.
Intensity matters more than people acknowledge. The rule of thumb that actually works: 1 watt of incandescent per square foot, or roughly 0.3 to 0.5 watts LED equivalent. For a standard 8x10 coop, you want about 25 to 40 actual LED watts total. Not equivalent watts. Actual. That sounds dim, but honestly it is dim. You should be able to read a newspaper in there, but it shouldn’t feel like a floodlight situation. I once overdid it with a 100W-equivalent LED in a small coop and the hens were visibly agitated at lights-on. Dropped to a 40W-equivalent and everything settled down within a few days.
Place the light high, centered over the flock’s living area, not over the roost. You don’t want to blast them while they’re sleeping.
Timing: This Is Where Most People Get It Wrong
Don’t add light in the evening to extend the day. Add it in the morning. This is the counterintuitive part that I got backwards for an entire season.
Evening light causes an abrupt cutoff when the bulb goes out, and hens can get caught off-roost in sudden darkness. That’s stressful and occasionally dangerous if your coop layout has any drop-off points. Morning light lets natural dusk be the signal to go to roost, which is how their system is wired.
Set a timer to turn the light on a few hours before sunrise. In December at my latitude (northern Virginia, so roughly 38°N), sunrise is around 7:15 AM and natural day length is about 9.5 hours. I set my timer to kick on at 3:00 AM, which gets me to 14+ hours of light by the time the sun sets at 4:45 PM. Yes, 3 AM sounds absurd. The hens don’t care. They go back to sleep after a few minutes and wake up again near dawn. It’s fine.
A mechanical outlet timer works. I used a basic Intermatic TN311 for years, around $12 at Home Depot. I’ve since switched to a smart plug (a Kasa EP25, around $16 on Amazon) so I can adjust timing remotely as photoperiod shifts through winter. Either approach is fine. The digital timer is more precise, which matters when you’re splitting hairs on photoperiod.
(One thing nobody tells you: you’ll need to adjust the timer roughly every two to three weeks through the season as sunrise shifts. Set it and forget it only works for about a month before you’re either under or over your target.)
When to Start, and the Molting Question
Start supplemental lighting before natural day length drops below 14 hours, not after production has already tanked. In most of the continental U.S., that means getting your system running by mid-September. Once hens have already quit laying and gone into a rest state, it takes longer to bring them back online. You’re not restarting a stopped engine; you’re trying to keep it from stopping in the first place.
The research here is mixed on whether you should supplement light for hens going through their annual molt. My personal approach: I don’t. Molt is a genuine physiological process they need to complete, and the energy that goes into feather regrowth is real. Forcing them back into lay during a heavy molt seems like a bad trade. I let them finish the molt, then start the light program. Usually that means I’m back to solid production by late October or early November for most of my flock.
Some people will tell you that supplementing light delays molt, which is true but not necessarily a problem. Hens who didn’t molt heavily the previous summer may skip or compress it. Watch your flock individually.

Not every breed cares equally about this. Production breeds, your Leghorns, Golden Comets, ISA Browns, will respond fast and dramatically. My ISA Browns went from near-zero to 90% production within two weeks of starting the light program. Heritage breeds are more variable. My Dominiques came back slower, and my Buckeyes barely budged until January regardless of light schedule. Silkies, Easter Eggers, and most ornamental breeds may not respond strongly at all.
I’ll be honest: if winter production is your main goal, heritage breeds make this harder than the hatchery descriptions imply. They’re wonderful birds for a hundred other reasons, but “good winter layer” is a stretch for many of them, light or no light.

Some keepers refuse to add supplemental lighting on the grounds that it’s “unnatural.” I respect the position but don’t share it. Hens in a coop in Virginia are already living an unnatural life in a dozen ways, including being fed a formulated diet, protected from predators, and housed in artificial structures. The argument that light supplementation specifically crosses some welfare line doesn’t hold up to scrutiny for me.
That said, the concern about shortened productive lifespan has some merit. A hen has a finite number of eggs she’ll ever produce. Running her year-round does pull from that total faster than a seasonal production cycle. For people keeping hens primarily as pets who happen to lay eggs, the math on that might look different than for someone running a serious backyard operation. Know what you’re optimizing for.
